Peace Like a River

Why not Run? Workshop Series

Peace is something that humans often seek for. We want peace. We pray for it. We hope for it.

But how many of us are actually willing to do what is necessary to receive it?

The definition of peace can be described as the absence of agitation and being disturbed. It’s a heart that is in a state of quiet and calmness.

  • Peace is a fruit of the Spirit.
  • Peace is found when we throw everything on God through prayer.
  • Peace is obtained through surrendering to Christ.
  • Peace is present with a smile of contentment.
  • Peace is a soul resting in thankfulness.
  • Peace links arms with the ability to rest – to be a human “being” rather than a human “doing”.
  • Peace is usually sought after during a time of trying circumstances.

The next time you get the chance, go to a river and sit awhile. Listen to the sound of the water as it flows over the rocks and think on this fact: Water does not make noise unless it is disturbed.

So what makes a river so peaceful?

Could it be that it just flows? It doesn’t fight. It doesn’t throw up an argument. It doesn’t condemn itself. It just flows right on over and around the rocks without a care in the world.

Having peace like a river is when, despite what we are going through, we are able to just flow right on by as if undisturbed by what is going on around us.

Have you ever listened to a testimony and asked yourself what impacts you so much about it? Is it that everything went right? Or is it that they made it through everything they went through?

Was the impact based on the rocks that was thrown at their peace?

Look at the verse below. Think about it. Pray about it. And ask God to show you how your soul can rest in peace to become a testimony of hope for others.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7
