What do you want?

Why not Run? Workshop Series

This by far is the biggest question God ever asked me. As a kid I always wondered what it would be like if God said the same thing to me as He did Solomon, “Ask what I shall give you.” (1 Kings 3:5) What would I ask for?

Quite a few years later I completely surrendered my life to the Lord, telling Him I would do whatever He wanted me to do.

A year later, Covid hit.

I was filled with a mixture of emotions as I had no clue what to do. I ended up taking several courses on business, Christian living, and training for races. During that year, 2020, the question came as I lay in bed.

“What do you want?”

All I remember is that I responded with, “I don’t know. But you know. Whatever you want.”

It seemed to be that once a year after that He would ask the same thing,

“What do you want?”

At some point I got frustrated and told Him that I didn’t know what I wanted and that He would have to tell me.

When the question came again in 2024, I was able to tell Him five things that I wanted. And His response was, “No there are seven things.” I said, “Yeah, I’ll take all seven, but I really just want the five.” This time instead of every year, it was a few times throughout 2024 that He asked until I finally said with a chuckle, “I want these seven things.”

What these seven things are is irrelevant to this post, but I wanted to share this scenario from my life in hopes that it will encourage you to answer this question as well. It is surprising to see how our desires change over time or how God grants them, but one thing is for sure…

If we truly love and delight in the Lord, He will give us our desires. As we commit our wants into His hands and trust Him, He will bring those things to pass.

The last few posts I have shared about three benefits of the abundant Christian Life. Peace, Joy, and Hope. These three are wrapped up in the Why not Run? Workshop. They are all linked and connected to each other, and through the theme verses, Psalm 37:4-5.

Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass. – Psalm 37:4-5

Hope is a necessary ingredient to sharing our desires with the Lord. Without hope in who He is and what He has done in the past, we will live a defeated, depressed life.

I challenge you this week to find one of your greatest desires and bring it to the Lord. Meditate on these verses and watch how God moves in your life.

Until next time,

Happy Running!
