The Desires of Your Heart

Dreaming with God

Delight thyself also in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of thine heart.

Psalm 37:4

Growing up, one of my favorite verses was Philippians 4:13 and Psalm 37:4.  I would write down my desires in prayer before God and then quote “I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me” all day.

As time went on though, God kept saying wait.  I began growing weary thinking to myself, I have been waiting.  How much longer?

Last week I mentioned that one of the ways that have helped me analyze my thoughts is to write down all my desires.  This shows us where our heart truly lies if we are completely honest with ourselves. It shows us where our treasure is.

I had this one desire though that I couldn’t explain.  This one emptiness in my soul that I wanted fulfilled.  But I never took this one to God.  I took everything else to Him though and He would continually fulfill them, change them, or say wait. Obviously there were also some No’s in there too, but I felt like those were rare.

Over the years I grew confident in God answering my prayers.  My petitions started including others and asking for wisdom, faith, or direction. I started adding in praise and thanksgiving.  My desires were always a way for me to draw closer to Christ and allowed for an open door to get to know Him more.

The past two years though, I’ve seen new desires arise and those desires fulfilled.  Desires I never would have thought possible for me to have. Desires that have given me hope, satisfaction, joy, peace, and fulfillment as they were fulfilled. And that desire – the emptiness in my soul that I wanted fulfilled – is still in the process of being fulfilled, but I’ve seen God working on it and that is so exciting!!

I’m going to include another sheet from the Why not Run? Workshop workbook for you to spend some time meditating on Psalm 37:4. I pray that as you grasp this verse as God meant you to, that you will experience another dimension to your Christian life than you ever thought possible.  Keep in mind though, that fruit takes awhile to grow.  Don’t expect anything of God to happen overnight.  It’s not that it’s not possible, because anything is possible with God, it’s just that that is not normally how God works.

I would encourage you, as the Lord leads, to spend some time dreaming with God and allow that to plant seeds of desire to spend more time with Him.

Be faithful in seeking Him and you will find Him!
