Bearing the Cross of Christ

Jesus was able to endure His cross because He was thinking of you!

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:2

As a runner, keeping why I run in the forefront of my mind is important.  This is where my motivation comes from.  It’s when I loose the reason why I am a runner that I allow depression to set in.

Growing up I wondered why thinking of the cross and what Christ did for me didn’t stir up some kind of emotion. It began to bother me, especially when a friend would tear up when he talked about Calvary.

Why didn’t I have that emotion?  Why didn’t it stir up love, or even sadness? One of my deepest desires was for this to be different.

It wasn’t until this year, that God answered that prayer.  It makes me so grateful and feel so loved when I think of what Jesus did for me and the sacrifice that He made.  I’ve mentioned before how during my trail half marathon in 2022 that I got a small glimpse of what Jesus went through.  I was low on electrolytes and water, thus my emotions and body were spent.  I thought I was either going to die or be sent to the hospital I felt so bad.  I heard an ambulance off in the distance and thought they were coming for me.  But it was in that moment that I imagined Jesus carrying the cross next to me.  I imagined Him hanging from the cross crying out for thirst – the sweat and blood dripping from His body.  As I meditated on Hebrews 12:3 I began to tear up and that’s when God began to do a work.

Bearing the cross of Christ is in general the same for all of us, but it is also different for each one of His children.

There are three things we need to keep in mind when we desire to carry the cross of Christ.

  1. We need to realize from our heart the deep love He has for us,
  2. We need to realize how sinful we are compared to the Holiness of God, and
  3. We need to realize we are each unique individuals.
